Background of the Study
Artificial intelligence (AI) has revolutionized language documentation by automating the transcription and analysis of oral languages. Among the Tiv communities, which have a rich oral tradition and complex linguistic structures, AI-driven tools offer promising methods to document language use efficiently. Traditional documentation methods, reliant on manual transcription, are both labor-intensive and subject to human error. AI applications, including automated speech recognition and natural language processing, provide a more scalable and precise approach to capturing Tiv oral narratives (Umeh, 2023). Recent developments have shown that AI can help in the rapid processing of large volumes of audio data, facilitating better archiving of historical language forms and cultural expressions (Bassey, 2024). The study investigates how these AI tools are being utilized within Tiv communities, evaluating their effectiveness in preserving linguistic nuances and contributing to the broader goals of language preservation and revitalization.
Statement of the Problem
Despite AI's transformative potential, the integration of automated language documentation systems in Tiv communities remains limited. Current AI models often struggle with the unique phonetic and syntactic features of the Tiv language, resulting in inaccuracies and incomplete documentation (Umeh, 2023; Bassey, 2024). This technological gap hinders the comprehensive preservation of Tiv linguistic heritage and poses challenges for researchers and cultural custodians. There is a pressing need to assess and refine AI-driven documentation methods tailored to the specific characteristics of Tiv.
Objectives of the Study
Research Questions
Significance of the Study
This study offers critical insights into the impact of AI on language documentation among Tiv communities. By identifying current challenges and suggesting tailored solutions, it supports efforts to modernize documentation practices and preserve the Tiv linguistic heritage. The findings will benefit linguists, technologists, and cultural preservation advocates.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on the application of AI in automating language documentation within Tiv communities. It does not cover manual documentation methods or other indigenous languages.
